How many times do you meet with another person for networking or a business meeting and they are:
- Not prepared
- Sort of prepared
If you have someone who is prepared, what is their level of engagement and follow up?
- Prepared – only wants to talk about themselves and what they can ‘get’ from you?
- Prepared – but then have little to no follow up on what they say they will do?
- Prepared – and then goes the extra mile to enthusiastically learn about you, and actively follows through to create connections you need or want, then schedules to meet with you and do it again?
Now- how do YOU show up?
Are you Engaged or Passionate about Networking?
Watch the video or read below to learn the difference. It matters and influences your business growth results.
In professional networking and business building, we hear all the time to “be engaged”.
The very first definition in the dictionary for engaged is:
involved in activity : occupied, busy
I don’t know about you, but I’m not looking to invest my time with people who are occupied or busy. No- those are time wasters. I’m a full believer in the law of reciprocity (Givers Gain) – but the key aspect to who I want to work with are others who will reciprocate. Not just show up and look occupied for busy.
So, I ask again, when YOU are networking, are you engaged or PASSIONATE?
Here’s a quick explanation of the distinction between being engaged and being passionate about your networking time and those you network with. The difference matters.
When you’re engaged that’s about being involved. You may take time to be proactive in an action but being engaged doesn’t necessarily mean that you have the passion to drive as a catalyst to follow up and go work on half of the other person to find referrals.
Building relationships and building your business based upon relationships for the long haul depends on you being passionate about the engagement!
It depends upon you being passionate about helping the other people build their business so you implement the law of reciprocity along the way.
In contrast, when you show up and you are just acting as a body in a room, who may or may not be listening, you are not fooling anyone.
You might appear physically to look like you’re engaged. The reality is, the person that you’re talking to, the people you’re networking with, are going to know you’re not really passionate about who you are, what you’re doing.
Your actions speak louder than words. Going through the motions- even if you are prepared, will not sustain a long term relationship for referrals if it is devoid of passion.
Here’s why: passion connects you with joy. It connects you until the highest emotional resonance that there is. Passion, enthusiasm and joy are contagious!
When you are passionate about who you are, the pride of what you do starts to show up. That starts to beam as a light bulb. People are attracted to passionate people!
You don’t have to be perfect in your skills. Your passion will drive your engagement, and that passion will net you results better than anything that you’ve ever received before by just ‘showing up and acting engaged’
Passion is the catalyst in life. In business. In networking. If you cannot be passionate about who you are and what you do, how can you expect others to be that way for you?
Bring your passion into the networking space and become fully engaged and on fire to GIVE to the people taking time to know you and build relationships with you.
Be passionate and engaged about your follow up. Be passionately engaged in getting to know those who can bring you referrals for the long haul- and start by being passionate and engaged in GIVING them referrals!
Enjoy your networking time. Dig deep into what you do and who you are to find your enthusiasm. Dig deep and be passionate about the network that you have. Be passionately engaged and prepared about the time that you’re investing into your networking.
